The difference between a diesel generator and a gas generator

In order to be able to compare a gas-burning generator and a diesel-fueled generator, it should be kept in mind that several factors such as initial investment, current unit costs, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions, the abundance of fuel resources, the difference in accessibility Units will play a role in this comparison. Both have their advantages, so examining the key aspects of each will help determine which type of generator best fits your operation.

Read on for more information on the difference between gas generators and diesel generators.

The main difference between gas generator and diesel generator is in the type of their fuel source, one is diesel and the other is natural gas. However, the way energy is produced is also different. The natural gas generator uses spark plugs to ignite the mixture of fuel and air, while the combustion in the diesel generator is by injecting fuel into the combustion chamber and exploding the fuel in the dense and hot air of the chamber.

Some advantages of diesel generator over gas generator:

  • Independence from the city gas network, which means that it is possible to supply electricity independently by using a diesel storage tank.  In gas generators, there is dependence on municipal gas unless liquid gas is used, which is possible due to arrangements.
  • The initial investment cost of diesel generator is about one third less than the investment cost of gas generators.

Some disadvantages of diesel generators compared to gas generators:

  • In diesel generators, there are far higher pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions than gas generators. Due to the release of polluting gases with a lower percentage than the exhaust of gas-burning generators, these generators are allowed to be installed in urban environments. After renewable power plants, gas power plants are the least polluting type of power plants.
  • The current cost of diesel fuel is much higher than gas generators. And due to the higher price of diesel compared to gas, in less than 3 months, the additional investment cost of the gas generator compared to the diesel generator will be compensated, and also with the supply of electricity in a period of 1.5 years, for the total amount of the initial investment. Fuel cost must be paid for diesel generators, which does not exist in gas generators.
  • Diesel generators are mostly used in emergency situations and temporarily, while gas generators are used permanently.
  •  In diesel generator, major repairs should be done every 15,000 hours of operation, while in gas generators, major repairs are done after 60,000 to 80,000 hours of operation. Therefore, the maintenance cost of gas generator engine is lower than diesel.

Commonalities of diesel generator and gas generator

  • The construction time of the power plant in both cases of diesel generator and gas generator construction is almost equal to each other.
  • The number of devices and capacities of diesel generators and gas generators are in the same range and therefore do not limit the choice.

The following can help you when choosing between a diesel generator or a gas engine generator:

  • Do you need a generator for primary or emergency use?
  • Will you have access to a steady fuel source?
  • How much do you spend on maintenance and more importantly fuel?
  • Is compliance with emission standards a priority for you?
